Typography: word art

A few posts back, I mentioned the power of art. ‘Tis true. Next to music, I can’t think of anything more engaging and emotional than a beautiful work of art (and beauty, as always, is in the eye of the beholder so I’m not just talking about a Rembrandt painting). So if you read this, you know I love fonts. Font whore is a pretty accurate descriptor. But I’m not really skilled in layout or design, so the font itself bears the burden when I’m trying to make a piece more interesting. Well recently I stumbled onto a really cool phenomenon that I call Word Art. Not to be confused with

No, not that garbage. I’m sure this technique has a proper name, but I like to think of it as Word Art. Because it is. It’s not just cool fonts, it’s how they’re used, where they’re used, the speed at which they appear in front of your eyes, the color, the weight, the kerning - everything comes into play. And it’s badass. I remember AMC employing this technique in one of their commercials - remember this? (turn your speakers down if you’re at work)

So then I started looking for others like it and found this blog entry that discussed it in detail. Here are some of the videos that they mentioned along with some others that I found. Watch these and tell me they don’t evoke some kind of emotion - yeah, it’s not the images of the movie, but it comes pretty close to recreating those images in a way you probably never would have thought of…

Fight Club (I think this one is my favorite)

Pulp Fiction (This one is pretty badass. Just like Samuel L. Jackson.)

Dwight’s speech from The Office (close second)

Snatch

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Wedding Crashers

Tenacious D - Inward Singing (typos in this one and it’s also a cd not a movie/tv show, but that’s ok)

Devil’s Advocate (I love Pacino - I think his voice makes this one really great)
